Lucius Shepard (1943-2014) may have published some juvenilia as early as 1952, with his first story, “Camp Greenville,” published the following year. In the late 60s, he published a book of poetry, and he began his mature career as a science fiction author with the 1983 publication of the story “The Taylorsville Reconstruction,” and his first novel, Green Eyes, appeared the following year. He won the Campbell Award for new author in 1985, a Nebula Award for his story “R&R,” which formed part of his Kurd-Laßwitz-Preis winning novel Life During Wartime, a Hugo for “Barnacle Bill the Spacer,” and the World Fantasy Award twice, both times for collections. Shepard wrote several stories set in the world of the Dragon Griaule, an enormous sleeping dragon that influenced the geography, culture, and climate of the area surrounding it. Shepard wrote numerous novellas, many of which were published in their own volumes.
